What is mankind's greatest invention? The wheel really got things rolling, fire truly heated up the competition, and using electricity was a bright idea to say the least. But by far the most notable and useful invention was language, and nothing else has been developed as much.
Language allows us to communicate thoughts and feelings, from the simplest message, such as simply saying hello, to contemplating some of life's most intricate and philosophical debates, such as the existence of black holes and parallel dimensions, or where odd socks actually disappear to.
A world of difference
Language has taken on countless forms, there are approximately a baffling 6,500 languages spoken in the world today, although 2,000 of these have less than a thousand speakers, along with 46 different alphabets. This is unbelievable, considering the fact that there are only (approximately) 196 different countries on our planet, which calculates to just over 33 completely unique languages per country. (Papua New Guinea speaks the most languages, 850 in total.) Needless to say, communicating internationally is extensive but essential.
In other words
The two usual methods of using language are verbally, which international application often involves speaking LOUDLY AND SLOW-LY until the recipient seems to understand, and written communication, which obviously you have already mastered. However, certain languages have always been more common for people of different nationalities to use. European languages are the most common, due to European colonialism and imperialism. But the most widely spoken language in the world today is English.
Spread the word
The English language is also by far the most common in the media, 54.9% of all web content is in English (Russian is the second most common at only 6.1%). In literature, the United States and United Kingdom hold 1st and 3rd place in the most yearly publications, with only China as competition. English is recognised as the language of science and the only truly global magazines and news broadcasts are in English.
Due to this global popularity, English is also the most common language used for international business. Of all employees whose jobs involve communicating with people in different countries, two thirds use English most often. English is quickly becoming not just another language, but a basic skill needed in the workforce.
